Dee Stone: Press/Reviews
This is Dee Stone and Charles Wright, known collectively as Stone/Wright. They are newly married after having worked together up and down the mid-Atlantic coast in the funk/rock group the Dee Stone Band. The cornerstone of the musical entity was always Dee’s powerful voice. Now coupled with Charles' intricate fingerwork on both acoustic and electric guitars, they have found the perfect combination of their incredible talents as a jazz/soul duo. But if you listen very carefully, you’ll still hear some rock bouncing around those gorgeous vocal chords and vibrant strings.
After nearly a ten-year hiatus, The Dee Stone Band has returned with Square One, their second album. The seven-song CD features a laid-back, mature mixture of rock and funk that’s incredibly clean and very well put together...solid rhythms, memorable melodies, and Dee Stone’s beautifully clear vocals. What really gives the album its edge and makes it stand out are Stone’s lyrics. Every song on the album focuses on a different issue or thought-provoking subject that’s uncommon to most music not specifically political or religious. “Glitter Like Gold (for Shaina),” speaks of the growth of her daughter, while “Religion” expresses opinions favoring spirituality over any and all religion.
The album is exceptional in every regard. The band’s great musicianship and writing skills, along with interesting lyrics makes for a great listen every time.
This is no diva carefully groomed for success. On the contrary, Stone is a natural, a soul singer with a live wire voice and a band that negotiates funk to rock grooves with power and smarts.
Her talent blazes.
